The Science of Fireworks at ScienceWorks

(Ashland, OR) June 25, 2003...The colors and sounds of fireworks generate "oohs" and "ahs" but did you ever stop to wonder how those colors, sounds and shapes are created in the midst of an explosion? On July 4 and 5, ScienceWorks explores the science and the mystery behind fireworks. The Science of Fireworks takes a look at how fireworks, well...work. Come learn about what makes fireworks the colors that they are, and how we get them in the air to do the things they do!

ScienceWorks has special Fourth of July hours. On July 4, ScienceWorks will be open from 1 to 5. On July 5, ScienceWorks returns to its regular schedule of 11 to 5. The Science of Fireworks performances will be at 2 and 4 on Friday, July 4, and at 1 and 3 on Saturday, July 5. In addition to the performances there will be hands-on activities throughout the day. At the "Make It and Take It" station try a cool, color-mixing chemistry experiment and make your own "fireworks"!

Due to safety concerns, the parking lot of ScienceWorks will not be open on evening of the 4th for fireworks viewing. According to Executive Director Sharon Javna, last year a number of small fires on the ScienceWorks grounds created a potentially dangerous situation.

"We want everyone to have a safe and fun holiday," says Javna. "We encourage people interested in fireworks to come experience The Science of Fireworks in the afternoon."

ScienceWorks is open Thursday through Sunday from 11 to 5. All performances and activities are free with admission. Located at 1500 East Main near Walker in Ashland, the air-conditioned museum has ample parking and is only a few minutes drive from downtown.
